Cape Cod Striped Bass Fishing on the Fly

“You should have been here yesterday.”

“The fishing was so good last week.”

And then, my personal favorite, said only once in a while by yours truly: “You should have been here today.”

Yesterday was one of those days where everything came together: the sun was out, the bait was abundant, the fish were feeding on top, and the birds helped lead the way.

Over the course of the day, three of us brought at least 40-50 fish to the boat. Many were in the 27-36″ class, but a few pushed the scales higher. Our friend in the neighboring boat caught one beast, pictured below.

It was a great day fly fishing (and spin fishing) for striped bass off Cape Cod. Hope to be back soon for more.

Thanks to Joshua Zacharias of Outermost Angling for a great day.

Another nearby double. Not seen: the fish busting in between our boats.

Big sand eels were abundant

So big, so bright it glimmers.

Most were on the fly — but yeah, ok, we threw some metal and plastic too.

This is what the feed looked like:

The appropriate reaction for an early season slammer jammer.

  1. Awesome report, lifetime memory right there. what were you guys throwing for flies? I think I see a mushmouth in one of the pics.

    • Nate: Small herring flies, mostly. Blue, black and white seemed to work best. It was a great day out!
