Review: Finn Utility Sutherland Reel Case

I’ve written before about how much I admire Finn Utility — a small New England company producing the highest end fly fishing products, crafted not from the latest technology but the most time-test: leather, waxed cotton, and wool. Ryan, the founder and designer, has a vision for products that don’t simply age, but age well — that look more beautiful with age, that reflect their stories. This is a sign of quality, a sign of craftsmanship.

This is the same with the new Sutherland reel case. Made of a sturdy, thick wool and leather, the case has a beautiful simplicity. It has a simple leather closure and a wool tab with a notch: that’s it. No marketing mumbo-jumbo, no flash. Just function.

I love what Ryan produces: American made products of the highest quality. Based in Vermont, right on the Winooski River, Finn’s products are hand crafted. As someone who grew up the grandson of a Rangley Lakes Maine guide, Ryan is a dedicated fly fisherman, and his products reflect it.

This case fits my 3 1/2″ Hardy Perfect absolutely perfectly. It’s a beautiful case — one I highly recommend!
