We all know Grundéns as the bright orange bibs that dot boats up and down the coast. It’s like a cup of Dunkin, or a Sox hat. You just recognize them a mile away.
But footwear? Yeah. Footwear.
We all know the Xtratuf boots, and these Grundens, when you see them for the first time, they look exactly like them. But are they any better? Worse?
Once you pick them up, you’ll notice a few more things about them as well: for once, they feel heavier. We put them onto a handy kitchen scale, to test out our instincts, and found that they were indeed heavier.
Where does this weight come from? Stepping into them, you feel the soles to be much thicker and sturdier. We found that this translated into some additional comfort over the course of the day.
This was especially true with the Grundéns flip flips. I’ve always found the Tevas to be comfortable initially, but to quickly not be comfortable — lacking in arch support, and with a soft material that quickly gets pounded down in the ankle.
These Grundéns flip flops? Awesome. The best I have for a day of fishing, hands down.
They do come in different sizes — ankle and slip-on. We do find that we prefer the boot ones, as they provide more water protection and support throughout the day.
Our only complaint? The little pull tabs on the boots are so small that it can be hard to quickly slip a finger into them. What’s the point, then? Just a little it more fabric and this would be much more convenient.
At less than 100 bills, these are a great boot. And the deck-boss sandal? The best boat fishing sandal around.
